Rangoli (English: Rangoli) is India's ancient cultural tradition and folk art.  The name and style of Rangoli may vary in different regions, but there is a substantial similarity in the underlying spirit and culture behind it.  Its same feature gives it diversity and also displays its various dimensions.  It is usually made with dry and natural colors on auspicious occasions like festivals, fasting, worship, festive marriage etc.  It can have simple geometric shapes or images of deities.  Their purpose is decoration and sumangal.  They are often made by women at home.

Alpana is also a name of Rangoli.  In Mohenjodaro and Harappa, there are also signs of Alpana.  Alpana is one of the fourteen arts mentioned in the Kamasutra of Vatsyayana.  It is a very ancient folk art.  In relation to its origin it is generally known that the word 'Alpana' derives from the Sanskrit word 'Olympen', Olympen means - to apply.  In ancient times, people believed that these artistic paintings are able to keep the city and villages full of wealth and preserve the property with its magical effect.  With this view, Alpana art was practiced on religious and social occasions.

Many fasts or pujas, in which alpana is given, date back to the era of Aryans.  Anand Kumar Swamy, who is called the Pandit of Indian art, is of the opinion that modern folk art of Bengal is directly related to the art of Mohenjodaro from 5000 years ago.  According to Gurushay Dutt, the originator of the Vratachari movement and a scholar of Bengali folk art and culture, the lotus flower that Bengali women make between their dreams is a replica of the lotus flower of Mohenjodaro.  Some other scholars believe that Alpana came from the Austric people in our culture, such as shaved species, who lived in this country many years before the arrival of the Aryans.  According to him, the folk art of ancient and traditional bungalows has been going on since the agricultural era.  The people of that time had believed in some deities and some magical effects, the practice of which led to a good harvest and the demons escaped.  Taking inspiration from these traditional accounts of Alpana, Avanindranath Tagore made this art an indispensable subject along with other painting subjects at Kala Bhavan in Shanti Niketan.  Today this art is known as Alpana of Shanti Niketan.
